A Walker motorcyclist was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after striking a canoe that fell from a van on a busy Kent County road. The crash happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Wilson Avenue SW and Hall Street SW, about three miles south of Standale.

Walker Police said the crash was caused by a canoe that fell off of a van.

According to the Walker Police Department, a southbound van traveling in the area lost a canoe from its roof. The canoe fell in the path of a motorcycle. The motorcyclist struck the canoe and crashed.

Officers responded to the scene and the motorcyclist was transported to a hospital. Multiple outlets reported the injuries as serious. The Walker Police Department posted to Facebook Tuesday afternoon advising people to avoid the Wilson and Hall streets area while the crash scene was active.

An unusual chain of events

Crashes caused by unsecured cargo are not rare in Michigan. But a canoe falling from a van and striking a motorcycle is an unusual scenario. Police have not released the identity of the motorcyclist or the driver of the van. It is unclear whether the van driver faced any citations for improperly securing the cargo.
