KENTWOOD, Mich. (Grand Rapids Press Wire) — Two men from Grand Rapids have been charged in connection to the fatal shooting that killed 25-year-old Juan "Johnny" Cisneros on Kalamazoo Avenue in Kentwood, according to the Kentwood Police Department.

Isaiah Xavier Guerrero, 22, was charged with open murder, possession of a weapon by a prohibited person, and felony firearms. Oscar Lagunes-Munoz, also 22, was charged with lying to a peace officer in a violent crime investigation. Both men were arrested on Tuesday, September 1, and were arraigned Thursday, police said.

Cisneros was shot around 4 a.m. on Monday, August 31, in the 5700 block of Kalamazoo Avenue Southeast near Gentian Drive Southeast. Police responded to a report of shots fired and found Cisneros shot. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died. A second person was also shot and hospitalized, though police said those injuries were non-life threatening.

The victim was well known in the Grand Rapids community. Cisneros was the third generation of his family to run Cisneros Tires, a business that has served the area for more than three decades.

Family members said the loss has devastated the community.

"It was devastating for everyone, of course, just not the type of phone call you would expect to wake up to, in every way possible. It was heartbreaking for every single person who knew Johnny," said his cousin Alita.

Neighbors and community members gathered outside Cisneros Tires on Wednesday for a vigil to honor his memory. Dozens of candles were left on the ground outside the shop.

"He was a protector, a provider. He was always here for any and everything, never failed to make me laugh. If I ever needed anything, he was the first one there," Alita said. "I think that in the world we live in today, you know, what we need is love. We need to spread love. And Johnny was very, very good at that."

Those who knew Cisneros described him as someone who never hesitated to help others, including homeless people in the neighborhood.

The Cisneros family is calling for answers in his death.
