Historic DeBoer Family Expands with New Restaurant Concept

Holland locals have long trusted the deBoer family for their baking and breakfast, and that tradition continues with the launch of Shore by deBoer, a new restaurant concept at 541 W. 17th St.

The deBoer family has been part of the local food scene since 1956, when they first opened their bakery in Holland. The roots of the business stretch even further back, with their grandfather working as a baker in the Netherlands before bringing those recipes and traditions to West Michigan.

Fourth Generation Running the Kitchen

Now, that legacy continues with a new generation stepping in to lead the business. Samuel, a classically trained master baker, brings creative direction to the kitchen, while Mitchiel, a graduate of the Florida Culinary Institute, serves as head chef.

Jacob helps lead operations, and even members of the fifth generation are already learning the craft at the family business.

Today, deBoer Bakkerij and Dutch Brothers Restaurants offer two distinct dining experiences in Holland. The south location leans fast and casual, while the north location offers a full-service breakfast and lunch menu featuring house-made baked goods.

New Restaurant Details

Shore by deBoer will offer breakfast and lunch service from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. The new restaurant will seat 88 guests inside, with additional patio space for about 40 more.

Mitchiel tells the Holland Sentinel the menu has been carefully crafted and will be something "fresh and vibrant" while maintaining the same level of service and hospitality that deBoer locations are known for.

The family purchased the building at 541 W. 17th St. - formerly Jackie's Place - back in 2024 and has been working to renovate the space for the new concept.

While the full menu has not yet been revealed to the public, the deBoer family shared on Facebook they are aiming for a spring opening, though an exact date has not been announced.

A Longstanding Local Institution

The deBoer family's presence in Holland dates back to 1956, when deBoer Bakkerij opened its first location. The business has grown through four generations, with each generation building upon the foundation laid by their predecessors.

The current leadership team combines traditional baking expertise with modern culinary training, ensuring the business continues to offer both authentic Dutch favorites and innovative new dishes.

Locals familiar with the deBoer brand can expect the same quality and hospitality they've come to know, now housed in a renovated space that will serve as the home for Shore by deBoer.
