A 35-year-old man from Spring Lake lost his life Sunday morning after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck in Crockery Township, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

The crash occurred around 12:24 a.m. on State Road just west of 136th Avenue in Crockery Township, northeast of Spring Lake.

The motorcyclist was riding west when a GMC pickup truck began backing out of a private driveway to also head west, according to deputies.

Investigators say the motorcyclist, riding a Harley-Davidson, attempted to pass the truck on the right as the vehicle entered the roadway. The motorcycle struck the front corner of the pickup, causing the rider to be thrown from the bike.

Emergency crews attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but the rider was pronounced dead.

The pickup truck was driven by a 39-year-old man from Kalamazoo, with two passengers — a 35-year-old woman and a 41-year-old woman, also from Kalamazoo. None of the occupants in the truck were injured.

State Road was closed for several hours while deputies investigated and crews cleared the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

A similar report from radio station WHTC stated the crash occurred around 12:25 a.m. The station also reported the truck driver was a 39-year-old Kalamazoo man backing out of a private driveway while the biker, going westbound, sped up in an attempt to get around the vehicle.

The motorcyclist struck the front corner of the truck and crashed, throwing its rider off and causing significant fatal injuries.

A LIFE EMS crew responded to the scene but efforts to revive the rider were unsuccessful. The station did not indicate whether the biker was helmeted at the time, as the incident remains under investigation.
