Caledonia Township, Mich. A man accused of setting fire to his father's home in Caledonia Township has been charged with murder after the 77-year-old victim died from injuries sustained in the blaze, according to Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker.

Tom Chehowski III, 54, was arrested in Gratiot County with the help of the Gratiot County Sheriff's Office. He faces the murder charge after his father, who also lived at the residence, succumbed to injuries suffered during the fire.

The fire was reported at a home on Channel Drive on the night of June 28 at approximately 11:45 p.m. According to the Kent County Sheriff's Office, a portion of the home collapsed while deputies were en route to the scene. When officers arrived, they found the 77-year-old man had gotten outside the home but was unresponsive due to serious fire-related injuries.

Deputies began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim and were able to restore his pulse and breathing before an ambulance arrived. The man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later died.

Investigators determined the fire originated in the victim's bedroom. In July, the Kent County Prosecutor's Office authorized charges of first-degree arson and assault with intent to murder against Chehowski III. Those charges were subsequently upgraded to include murder.
