JENISON, Mich. — A popular splash pad in Jenison will remain closed for the rest of the year after lightning damage from a storm knocked out the equipment that powers it, city officials said.

The splash pad at Maplewood Park suffered damage to its electronic control unit during a storm on Aug. 31, according to Andy Rienstra, the city's assistant superintendent. Because that unit regulates the operation of the splash pad, the attraction cannot safely reopen until the damage is repaired.

Repairs are not expected to be completed until next spring, Rienstra said. The total cost of the repairs has not yet been determined.

The closure comes just as the summer splash pad season is winding down. The park normally operates its splash pad from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

Jenison residents who were counting on a few more weeks of cooling off at Maplewood Park will have to wait for the spring. The city's other splash pad, at Rosewood Park, will remain open until Labor Day.

City officials apologized for the inconvenience and said they hope the Maplewood Park splash pad will be ready to welcome families again next season.
