A road rage confrontation on the border of Grand Rapids and Kentwood turned violent Wednesday evening when a suspect fired gunshots at a vehicle and physically assaulted the driver. The Grand Rapids Police Department took the suspect into custody at the scene.

The incident was reported just after 5 p.m. at the intersection of 28th Street and East Beltline Avenue, according to police reports from multiple outlets.

Shots fired, then an assault

Police said the suspect fired shots from their vehicle during a road-rage confrontation. The gunfire did not hit the victim, but bullet holes were visible in the windshield of the victim's car, which was later towed away, according to WOOD TV 8.

After the shooting, the suspect exited their vehicle and physically assaulted the victim, police said.

"The suspect shot at the victim's car and physically assaulted the victim," a GRPD spokesperson said, according to FOX 17.

Victim hospitalized with chin wound

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police initially said there were no gunshot wounds. A subsequent update clarified that the victim sustained a wound under the chin.

"It was not initially clear if it was a result of a bullet graze, shrapnel, or the assault," FOX 17 reported, citing a GRPD update.

The wound's exact cause remains under investigation, according to MLive.

Major intersection shut down for two hours

The Kentwood Police Department, Grand Rapids Police Department, and Michigan State Police all responded to the scene, according to WZZM 13.

Northbound and southbound lanes of East Beltline Avenue north of 28th Street were closed during the investigation. The roadway reopened around 6:20 p.m., roughly two hours after the incident began, police said.

The suspect remains in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
