Goodwill Stores in Kent, Ionia, Montcalm, Mecosta, Isabella and Ottawa Counties Affected

GRANDVILLE, Mich. — Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids announced Friday that the organization has been operating on a cash-only basis after experiencing a ransomware attack that disrupted their point-of-sale systems.

The cyberattack impacted a portion of Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids' network environment, forcing the nonprofit to disable their electronic payment processing while they work with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to restore their systems.

Stores Remain Open

Despite the disruption, all 18 Goodwill stores across the six-county region remain open for business. Customers can continue to shop using cash until the organization resolves the incident.

"Our stores continue to be open for business, and we expect to continue cash-only transactions for the next several days," Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids officials said in a statement. "We wish to thank our customers and community partners for their patience and support while we work through this issue."

No Credit Card Data Breach

Goodwill officials confirmed that their point-of-sale systems do not store credit card information, meaning customers' financial data was not compromised in the attack. The cash-only measure is purely operational as they rebuild their payment processing infrastructure.

"Our investigation is ongoing, and we do not yet have a confirmed timeline for full resolution," the organization added.

Attack Details

The ransomware attack appears to have targeted Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids' local network infrastructure rather than their systems in other communities. Because each Goodwill organization operates on separate systems, stores in other areas were not affected by the incident.

Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids operates 18 retail locations across Kent County, Ionia County, Montcalm County, Mecosta County, Isabella County, and a portion of Ottawa County, in addition to their online shopping site.

The organization serves thousands of community members daily, providing job training, career services, and retail employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other employment barriers.
