# Forest Hills school bus struck by SUV at red light on East Beltline. Woman hospitalized, children unharmed

The crash

A Forest Hills Public Schools bus was struck by an SUV that ran a red light Wednesday afternoon at a busy Grand Rapids intersection. The driver of the SUV was hospitalized. The students and bus driver were not hurt.

The crash occurred at the intersection of East Beltline Avenue and 3 Mile Road around 12:09 p.m. on June 3, according to Michigan State Police.

What happened

Early investigation results show the SUV was headed south on East Beltline when it entered the intersection against a red light. The Forest Hills school bus was traveling east on 3 Mile Road at the time of the collision, police said.

The 39-year-old driver of the SUV, identified as a Grand Rapids woman by News Channel 3, was taken to the hospital to receive treatment. Fox 17 reported she is expected to survive.

Several children were aboard the bus at the time of the crash. The bus driver and all students were unharmed, state police confirmed.

The investigation continues

Michigan State Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Troopers issued a statement online about the incident.

"This incident serves as an important reminder to obey traffic signals and remain attentive while driving. Thankfully, this crash did not result in serious injuries, but it could have had a much different outcome."

The investigation is ongoing.

Why it matters

East Beltline and 3 Mile Road is a high-traffic corridor on the eastern edge of Grand Rapids. The intersection sits near the boundary where Forest Hills, East Grand Rapids, and Grand Rapids Township meet. School buses and commuter traffic share the road daily.

Forest Hills Public Schools has not yet issued a statement about whether bus routes were disrupted following the crash.
