An elderly man is in critical condition after a house fire in Caledonia Township left part of a home collapsed and one resident unresponsive.

The fire broke out around 11:50 p.m. Sunday on Channel Drive SE, near the intersection of McCords Avenue SE and 68th Street SE, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Office.

House partially collapsed during response

Firefighters from several local departments responded to the scene. Part of the house collapsed while crews were en route, the sheriff's office said. All occupants escaped the structure.

One resident, an elderly man, then became unresponsive, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies began CPR at the scene and restored a pulse, according to the sheriff's office. The man was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Initial reports of two hospitalized were incorrect

Dispatchers initially told News 8 that two people were taken to the hospital. Deputies later clarified that only one person was transported.

Aero Med was called to assist with transport. The air ambulance could not fly due to weather conditions. The patient was transported by ground ambulance instead.

Cause under investigation

It is not clear what caused the fire. Investigators are expected to return to the scene on Monday, according to the sheriff's office.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office did not specify the age or identity of the man hospitalized. No other injuries were reported.
