Eastown Brewery 'The Ferment' Unveils Tasting Room on Fulton Street
A new craft brewery called The Ferment opened its tasting room on Fulton Street in Eastown today, bringing locally sourced sour ales and seasonal IPAs to the historic neighborhood. Founder Marcus Thorne aims to integrate the venue with the surrounding community through live music and food partnerships.

Eastown, a vibrant neighborhood in Grand Rapids known for its historic homes and bustling commercial corridor, welcomed a new addition to its culinary scene today. The Ferment, a new craft brewery and tasting room, officially opened its doors at 530 Fulton Street, just steps away from the Grand River and the popular Eastown Farmers Market.
Owner Marcus Thorne, who previously managed a food truck on Bridge Street, spent the last eighteen months designing the space with an industrial-chic aesthetic. 'We wanted to create a spot that feels like part of the Eastown story,' Thorne said during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. 'Our location on Fulton Street puts us right in the heart of the action, next to the theater district and the riverfront.'
The brewery's initial menu features a rotating selection of sours and IPAs brewed using local ingredients from West Michigan farms. Thorne emphasized the commitment to sustainability, noting that the water used for brewing is sourced directly from the Grand River and treated on-site. 'Quality isn't just about taste; it's about where our ingredients come from and how we treat our neighbors,' he added.
Patrons can expect a diverse atmosphere ranging from quiet booths for conversation to a main stage for live music. The venue is set to host weekly jazz nights starting this Friday, with performances by local artists from the Gerald R. Ford Theater Conservatory. 'Music is the heartbeat of Eastown,' Thorne noted. 'We're excited to contribute to that rhythm by providing a stage for emerging talent.'
Local food vendors are also partnering with The Ferment to offer small plates designed to complement the beer selection. Early reservations include fried chicken tacos from a nearby Eastown staple and artisanal burgers from a vendor that has operated on Monroe Avenue for over a decade. 'We're building a community around the taproom,' said Thorne, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the neighborhood.
The opening coincides with a surge in interest for new businesses in the Fulton Street corridor, which has seen significant foot traffic since the revitalization efforts began three years ago. The Ferment joins several other establishments that have recently transformed the area into a premier destination for dining and nightlife in West Michigan.
Thorne plans to expand the menu over the coming months, with a focus on introducing a full-service kitchen by late summer. 'We're listening to our customers and their feedback,' he said. 'Eastown has shown us incredible support, and we want to give back by creating a space where everyone feels welcome.'
The Ferment is now accepting reservations for its opening weekend, with special events scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights. The venue is expected to remain open late, aligning with the lively nightlife culture that defines the Eastown district.
