The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. on March 25, 2026, shortly after the sun began to rise over the historic district. One male victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Spectrum Health Grand Rapids, while another individual suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Sheriff Mike Witzke stated that the area around the community center and adjacent to the Grand River was immediately cordoned off as a crime scene. 'We are treating this as a critical situation and are working diligently to piece together the events that transpired,' Witzke said during a press briefing from the Sheriff's Office headquarters on Bridge Street.
