The Kent County Sheriff's Office launched a critical investigation following a shooting that left one man dead and another injured near the Heritage Hill Community Center on Wednesday morning. Authorities are seeking witnesses to the incident which occurred close to the Grand River before emergency responders arrived.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday that a shooting took place near the Heritage Hill Community Center, located at 1800 Heritage Hill Drive NW. The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. on March 25, 2026, shortly after the sun began to rise over the historic district. One male victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Spectrum Health Grand Rapids, while another individual suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Sheriff Mike Witzke stated that the area around the community center and adjacent to the Grand River was immediately cordoned off as a crime scene. 'We are treating this as a critical situation and are working diligently to piece together the events that transpired,' Witzke said during a press briefing from the Sheriff's Office headquarters on Bridge Street. Law enforcement agencies from Kent County are collaborating to ensure a thorough investigation.
Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots echoing off the nearby buildings before seeing emergency vehicles rushing to the location. One resident living nearby, who asked not to be named for safety reasons, told reporters, 'I heard the shots and immediately ran to my window. It was chaotic, and I could see the ambulance arriving within minutes. The street was completely shut down by then.'
The victim who was injured was transported to Spectrum Health Grand Rapids for treatment. According to initial reports, he was in stable condition. Police believe the shooting may have been targeted, though the motive remains unknown at this time. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from cameras located at the Heritage Hill Community Center and nearby businesses on Wealthy Street.
Kent County deputies established a perimeter around the scene to prevent unauthorized entry and to preserve potential evidence. The Grand River, which flows just south of the community center, is a popular spot for residents and is frequently monitored by the law enforcement. Sheriff's Office personnel noted that they are reviewing all available resources to identify any suspects or additional victims.
Local officials have urged the public to cooperate with the investigation. 'We need your help to ensure justice is served for the victims and their families,' said Witzke. Community members are being asked to contact the non-emergency line if they have any information regarding the incident.
The Kent County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Residents in the Heritage Hill neighborhood and surrounding areas are advised to remain vigilant. Further updates on the case will be released as more information becomes available through official channels.
