An East Grand Rapids resident spent more than 15 hours on a bicycle on Father's Day weekend to honor his father and raise awareness for Alzheimer's disease.

Adam Baiers rode continuous five-mile loops around Reeds Lake from sunrise to sunset on June 21, according to a report from WOOD TV.

"For more than 15 hours, from sunrise to sunset, Adam Baiers rode continuous five-mile loops around the lake to honor his father and raise money and awareness for Alzheimer's disease," the station reported.

The ride took place while families across the area gathered to celebrate Father's Day. Baiers chose the long summer day to pedal with a personal mission.

A Father's Day ride with a purpose

Baiers is an East Grand Rapids resident. His father has been affected by Alzheimer's disease. The bicycle ride served as both a memorial and a fundraiser for the cause.

The route around Reeds Lake is approximately five miles per loop. Riding for over 15 hours means Baiers covered an estimated 75 miles or more during the event.

Alzheimer's awareness in West Michigan

Alzheimer's disease affects more than 6 million Americans, according to the Alzheimer's Association. The disease places a heavy burden on families who watch loved ones lose their memories and independence.

Baiers' ride drew attention to the local impact of the disease. The story was picked up by WOOD TV, a Grand Rapids-based news outlet, and syndicated through AOL and Yahoo News.

"As families spent Father's Day weekend enjoying the sunshine around Reeds Lake, one East Grand Rapids man spent the longest day of the year pedaling with a purpose," WOOD TV reported.

Community response

The ride was a solo effort. Baiers did not participate in an organized group event. He set out on his own to complete the challenge and honor his father.

Reeds Lake is a popular recreational area in East Grand Rapids. Residents and visitors use the lake for running, biking, and boating throughout the summer. The Reeds Lake Run, a community event, is scheduled for June 27, 2026.
