Charles Broomfield Waives Preliminary Hearing, Triple Murder Case Moves Forward

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids man charged in the deaths of his fiancée and her two teenage sons has waived his preliminary hearing, clearing the way for his case to proceed to trial.

Charles Broomfield, 44, faces three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of felony firearm in connection with the January 27 killings of Jacqueline Neill, 44, and her sons Michael Kilpatrick, 13, and Cameron Kilpatrick, 15.

Initial Story Contradicted by Evidence

According to Grand Rapids Police, officers were called to the family's home on Worden Street around 7:43 a.m. on reports of shots fired. Neill was found dead in the living room, while Cameron and Michael were found in their bedrooms.

Broomfield initially told police that two armed intruders had broken into the home, threatened him and his 5-year-old son, and then shot the victims before fleeing. However, investigators say the evidence contradicted his account.

Per court records, Broomfield eventually confessed to the killings during a lengthy interview with investigators.

Prosecution Takes Case Forward

In court on Tuesday, Charles Broomfield waived his right to a preliminary hearing, according to Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker. That means he is now set to stand trial for three counts of premeditated murder.

A judge found Broomfield competent to stand trial in the case last week. His next court date has not yet been set.

Severity of Charges

If convicted on all counts, Broomfield faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Loved ones have described the tragedy as their "darkest hour," calling it a senseless act of violence. They thanked investigators, victim advocates, and Grand Rapids neighbors for the outpouring of support during an unimaginable loss.
