Tornado touchdown confirmed near Caledonia

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-0 tornado touched down just east of Caledonia in Kent County on Thursday night, June 11, 2026. The twister struck at 9:31 p.m., roughly 2 miles east-southeast of Caledonia, near the intersection of 100th Street and Alaska Avenue Southeast.

Survey teams from the NWS in Grand Rapids completed their assessment over the weekend and released preliminary findings on Saturday, June 13.

Golf course takes the brunt of the damage

The tornado reached its peak intensity while moving through the southern part of Saskatoon Golf Club, a 48-hole public course in southeastern Kent County. Significant tree damage occurred on the property.

"Can't believe we are posting about this yet again. The beautiful Blue course was a direct hit by last night's tornado and is closed until further notice. Blue #4 and #5 have significant damage and our maintenance crews are working hard to clean up the mess and repair the course," Saskatoon Golf Club wrote on social media.

The tornado traveled 4.25 miles with a maximum width of 75 yards. Peak winds were estimated at 85 mph, according to the NWS storm survey. Spotty tree damage occurred between Alaska Avenue Southeast and Whitneyville Avenue Southeast before the tornado crossed Whitneyville Avenue and moved into open fields.

The twister lifted after crossing Morse Lake Avenue Southeast and Bergy Avenue Southeast.

No injuries reported

No injuries or fatalities were reported from the Kent County tornado. The storm also produced a second EF-0 tornado in Barry County with peak winds of 75 mph. That tornado caused tree damage and covered a house with fallen branches near Irving Township.

Michigan's tornado count rises

The two tornadoes brought Michigan's 2026 total to 20, exceeding the state's annual average of 15. The season started early this year, with four tornadoes touching down in West Michigan on March 6, including an EF2 in Three Rivers and an EF3 in Union City.

The June 11 storms were part of a larger Midwest severe weather outbreak that produced more than 30 tornadoes across the region, with the strongest occurring in Illinois and Indiana.

What to expect next

Saskatoon Golf Club said the Blue course remains closed while crews work to clear debris and repair damage. The NWS did not specify a timeline for when the course might reopen.

Residents in the Caledonia area who experienced property damage from the Thursday night storms can report it to their local insurance providers and to the Kent County Emergency Management office for documentation purposes.
