GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Byron Center man was arrested early Wednesday morning after Michigan State Police clocked him driving 158 mph on US-131 south of Grand Rapids, according to the MSP Sixth District.

The driver, a 23-year-old Byron Center man, was traveling in a black BMW M5 when troopers from the Grand Rapids Post clocked him at 158 mph on southbound US-131 near M-6 at about 1:25 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, the MSP Sixth District said on X.

After the driver was pulled over, troopers found a loaded firearm near the center console of the vehicle, the department said.

The man was arrested on charges of reckless driving and carrying a concealed weapon, the MSP Sixth District said. He was lodged in the Kent County Jail.

"158 mph isn't just speeding. It's putting yourself and everyone else on the road at serious risk," MSP said in a statement.

US-131 is a major four-lane corridor that runs south from Grand Rapids into Kalamazoo County and carries heavy traffic around the clock. State police have been stepping up enforcement along the highway in recent months after a string of high-speed crashes.

A Kent County prosecutor will review the case for additional charges. The driver's name has not been released, but MSP said he is a 23-year-old resident of Byron Center.
