Grand Rapids women's clothing boutique Basic Bee Boutique is permanently closing its Wealthy Street location on May 10 after more than five years in business.

The closure was announced by the store on social media, thanking customers for their support since opening in 2020.

"To every single person who has shopped with us, supported us, told a friend, shared a post, or simply walked through our doors…thank you," according to the announcement. "You helped bring Basic Bee to life, and you are the reason it became what it is."

Basic Bee, located at 804 Wealthy St. SE, was originally opened in November 2020 at 325 S. Division Ave. before moving to its current location.

The boutique was founded by Renise Warners with "the goal of bringing styles not commonly found in the Grand Rapids area," according to its website.

In its closure announcement, Warners called the store "a place where friendships were made, confidence was built, and so many special moments were shared."

"What started as an idea during a time of uncertainty turned into something I will be proud of for the rest of my life," Warners said.

Warners could not be reached for comment Monday.

The announcement came just days after the store celebrated five years of operation. Basic Bee originally opened in 2020 and moved to its current location on Wealthy Street in 2021 according to local business coverage.

The closure highlights the ongoing challenges facing independent retail businesses in the Grand Rapids area as consumer habits continue to shift and competition from larger chains grows.

The store will remain open through May 10, giving customers a final chance to shop before the permanent closure.
