Tragic Crash at Mobile Home Park Leaves Child Dead, Driver to Face Reckless Driving Causing Death Charge

CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. — A 3-year-old child died after being struck by a pickup truck in northern Kent County on Friday afternoon, and the driver — identified as the child's mother's fiancé — will face criminal charges in connection with the incident.

The crash occurred at the Northland Estates Mobile Home Park in Cedar Springs just after 4 p.m. on April 3, 2026, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Office. Emergency crews — including KCSO deputies, Michigan State Police, area fire and EMS personnel — responded immediately to the scene. Life-saving measures were attempted, but the child died from severe injuries sustained in the crash.

On Saturday, investigators announced that the 33-year-old man behind the wheel of the pickup truck will face charges of reckless driving causing death. The sheriff's office did not identify the driver by name, save for stating he was the fiancé of the child's mother.

Initial investigation results point to the man's reckless driving as a factor in the crash. Detectives also believe alcohol may have been involved in the situation, according to the sheriff's office.

The man is expected to be arraigned on the charge of reckless driving causing death next week. Additional charges could also be filed, the sheriff's office said.

"Incidents involving children are especially difficult for everyone involved, and we also recognize the police, firefighters, EMS personnel, and dispatchers who responded and worked this tragic scene."

The Kent County Sheriff's Office Traffic Safety Unit and Investigative Division are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
