Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids Cyber Attack Disrupts Point-of-Sale Systems

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids has been forced to operate on a cash-only basis after experiencing a cyberattack that disrupted its point-of-sale systems, according to a statement released Friday, March 27.

The nonprofit organization confirmed that the attack impacted network resources used to run its local stores across the six-county region, which includes Kent, Ionia, Montcalm, Mecosta, Isabella, and a portion of Ottawa County.

Investigation Underway

Goodwill immediately notified law enforcement and has brought in external cybersecurity experts to investigate the situation, understand the scope, and restore systems as quickly and safely as possible.

"Our investigation is ongoing, and we do not yet have a confirmed timeline for full resolution," Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids said in its statement.

The organization expects the cash-only policy to remain in place for the next several days as it works to rebuild its point-of-sale program.

Customers Impacted

While the attack took down the digital payment systems, Goodwill organizations are local nonprofits that all operate on separate systems. This incident has no impact on Goodwill stores or organizations in other communities around the country.

No Credit Card Data at Risk

One important note for shoppers: Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids does not store credit card data on its systems, meaning customer payment information was not at risk during the breach.

The organization operates 18 retail stores and an online shopping site across its service region, providing job training and placement programs that assist individuals with disabilities and other employment barriers.
