A Michigan State Police trooper fired a shot in Muskegon Township Monday evening after a man presented a firearm to officers, the man was hospitalized and later taken into custody, and the trooper is now on administrative leave pending an investigation.

The incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. at a residence on South Sheridan Avenue in Muskegon Township according to law enforcement officials. The Michigan State Police Fifth District Incident Response Team responded to the scene along with other local agencies after receiving a report of an armed, suicidal man.

According to a detective lieutenant on the scene, when troopers arrived the subject was holding a gun and presented it during the encounter. A trooper returned fire and struck the man. The suspect was wounded and later transported to a hospital where he was initially described as being in critical condition but was later updated to stable.

The suspect is 58 years old. No law enforcement officers or community members were injured in the incident.

The trooper who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy. Once the investigation is complete it will be submitted to the Michigan Department of Attorney General for review as required by law.

Upon arrival a subject did present a firearm and a trooper did return fire striking that subject
