A popular Guatemalan bakery that operated for four years on Grand Rapids' Fulton Street has opened its doors at a new location in Comstock Park, citing the need for more parking and expanded space for customers.

Mi Bella Guatemala Shop moved to 3728 Alpine Avenue NW in Comstock Park. The family-owned business previously operated at the corner of Fulton Street and Fuller Avenue in Grand Rapids.

Why the bakery moved

The owners said parking constraints at the original location were the primary driver behind the relocation.

"Mostly we moved here because of the location," said Josué Rodas Hernández, who translated for his parents and bakery owners Blay Orodus and Alva Hernandez. "On Fulton, there was less parking. It was a good area, there just wasn't a lot of parking."

The new Alpine Avenue location sits about 15 minutes from the former storefront. According to the family, the move gives customers easier access and more room inside the shop.

What the bakery offers

Mi Bella Guatemala prepares its baked goods in-house daily. The menu includes traditional items such as churros and conchas, along with cakes and breads made fresh each day.

The bakery also accepts large custom orders for community events.

"You can order for a party or any type of event, you can order like a huge box of like 100 pieces of bread, or more, as much as you want," Rodas Hernández said. "Also, with the cakes too, we have different orders for birthdays, graduations, kids' parties, anything."

The shop handles orders for parties, graduations, schools, and other community gatherings.

Thanks to longtime customers

The family expressed gratitude to the customers who supported the bakery during its four years at the Fulton Street location.

"We're thankful for everyone who was at Fulton who supported us in the four years that we were there," Rodas Hernández translated for his parents.

The owners say they are looking forward to welcoming both returning customers from Grand Rapids and new patrons from the Comstock Park area as the business settles into its new home.
