A suspect is in custody after firing gunshots at a vehicle and physically assaulting a motorist in a road rage incident on the Kentwood and Grand Rapids border, police said.

The confrontation unfolded just after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 28th Street and East Beltline Avenue SE, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Shots fired, no one hit by gunfire

Police said the suspect fired shots from a vehicle during the road rage confrontation. No one was struck by the gunfire, authorities confirmed.

A WOODTV news crew at the scene documented bullet holes in the windshield of a vehicle that was later towed away.

Victim hospitalized with chin wound

After firing the shots, the suspect physically assaulted the victim, police said. The victim suffered a wound to the chin and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

It was not immediately clear whether the victim's injuries resulted from the gunfire or the physical assault, according to reporting by John Agar of the Grand Rapids Press.

Major intersection shut down

East Beltline Avenue was closed to northbound traffic for approximately two hours following the incident, police said. The roadway has since reopened.

The Kentwood Police Department, Grand Rapids Police Department, and Michigan State Police all responded to the scene, according to reporting by WZZM13.

The suspect was arrested at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
