A fatal crash on Cottonwood Drive closes the road for four hours

A 32-year-old man from Jenison died Friday morning after his motorcycle collided with a Chevrolet Equinox at the intersection of Cottonwood Drive and Summerset Drive in Georgetown Township, just north of the Grandville corridor.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office dispatched deputies to the scene around 8:50 a.m. Friday, May 22. Investigators say the motorcyclist was riding a Yamaha motorcycle and attempted to turn left from Summerset Drive onto northbound Cottonwood Drive. He pulled into the path of the SUV, according to the sheriff's office.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet but did not survive his injuries, deputies said. His name has not been released.

Three people in the SUV, two hospitalized

The Chevrolet Equinox carried three occupants from Grand Rapids, according to WOODTV and the Ottawa News Network.

• The driver, a 21-year-old Grand Rapids man, sustained minor injuries
• A 21-year-old female passenger from Grand Rapids also sustained minor injuries
• A 23-year-old male passenger from Grand Rapids was not injured

The driver and the female passenger were taken to a Grand Rapids-area hospital for treatment, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said. Authorities did not name the medical facility.

Cottonwood Drive shut down for nearly four hours

Cottonwood Drive was closed between Baldwin Street and Bauer Road while investigators processed the scene and crews cleaned up the crash site. The road reopened at approximately 12:45 p.m., FOX 17 reported.

Georgetown Township Fire assisted with patient care and traffic control at the scene.

"It took nearly four hours before Cottonwood Drive reopened to traffic, as the incident remains under investigation," WHTC reported, citing Ottawa County Sheriff's Sergeant Jon Smoes, who was among the first responders on scene.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. No charges have been announced.

A second crash near Grandville earlier in the week

This fatal crash follows another serious collision in the area earlier this week. On Monday, May 18, two motorists were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash at 44th Street west of Kenowa Avenue, also in Georgetown Township.

A 21-year-old woman from Wyoming driving westbound struck an eastbound minivan driven by a 73-year-old man from Hudsonville, WHTC reported. The Hudsonville man was taken to University of Michigan Health-West in Wyoming in serious condition. The Wyoming woman was treated at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening at the time.
