A 21-year-old Grand Rapids man died Wednesday morning after being ejected from his vehicle in a rollover crash in Port Sheldon Township.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, authorities responded to the crash in a construction area on Van Buren Street and 152nd Avenue at around 7 a.m.

The 21-year-old driver, who was the vehicle's only occupant, had been ejected and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Construction Zone Conditions May Have Contributed

The crash occurred in a construction area where the westbound lane of Van Buren Street was closed for construction work.

Officials say the westbound lane of Van Buren Street was closed for construction. The westbound lane was all sand, and the eastbound lane was covered in gravel.

Fox 17 reported that officials believe the vehicle was traveling the wrong way in the westbound lane, and lost control when switching lanes from the gravel to the sand.

WHTC added that Port Sheldon Street was being repaved in that area, with one half being sand and the other half gravel. The apparently unbuckled driver was thrown out of the window when the vehicle rolled over.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says the crash remains under investigation.
